I currently am using 2005-4. Question is there an easy way of upgrading to KANOTIX 2006-01-RC4, and still keep all your settings and apts? |

To say it clear: Probably not.
You can try the update-scripts by h2 but I don't know if its currently able to handle this task to your satisfaction. Another way is an update-install with the Kanotix 2006-1 RC4 CD but then you'll probably loose addtional installed programs which are originally not part of the CD. Wait for some more answers |

Last tests show that du-fixes will still update 2005-4, but it's a long, nasty process, and requires many many install -f and du, that's number 1 and 2, after the first du runs, then sometimes your connection drops, and some steps fail, but I tried to fix that particular issue today.
I added a networking restart that runs after the first du, but it's not guaranteed to work, so you may need to check that networking didn't drop.
If it does, exit the script, just restart networking like this, /etc/init.d/networking restart
and delete /etc/du-fixes.conf and run the script again, and all should be well.
You will need to install a newer kernel first, or the install will fail, by the way.
Best procedure is to just avoid this whole thing and do a du at least one time a month, better one time a week.
However, on the bright side, if you do the du-fixes upgrade, which will take a while, and it fails, you can always just use the update-install option from the 2006-1 livecd, and you'll have all your /home information, minus your extra packages.
Number one cause of du failure on old installs: failure to READ THE DIRECTIONS, and not running enough install -f and du to get it over the worst parts, and thinking it's done when it's not done. If you hit du and install -f 2 or 3 times, one after the other, and nothing happens, it's probably done. |

update-install:
settings will be kept
apps nope
dist-upgrade:
settings will be kept
apps also
I think to make a dist-upgrade will be not a problem for 2005-04 |

And don't forget that you can do an "update-installation" that, while it wipes out your installed apps, makes a list of them so you can easily reinstall them with a one-line "apt-get" command. Works best with a high-speed Internet connection and a separate /home partition.
See the Kanotix manual (link on the left), section 5.3, for more info. |
