Titel: Solved: fix-res on Satellite 4030CDT

I've just bought a used Toshibe Satellite 4030CDT, with a 13" Monitor.
And I was able to install Kanotix on it.
But the resolution is fixed at 640x480, which means that I can't even get basic program to appear on the screen.
fix-res 800x600 and
fix-res 1024x768 had no effect on the problem. Can anybody tell me what I need to do?

Edit: It supposedly has an old Trident Chipset. Would it be appropriate to try
install-fglrx-debian.sh
in that case? |

| No, trident must be the driver in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf. If that is already the case use knxcc to remove all modelines. |

Thank you for the help. I found it useful to use knxcc as you suggestd, because now at least I can achieve 800x600.
One reason for which I may not be able to use my full screen, is the possibility that this Laptop has a very odd number of pixels. Or could you see a plausible reason for which only those two resoulutions should remain available, even after another fix-res 1024x768 ?

| Wrongly reported modelines, therefore remove em. Did you check if vesa or trident is used as driver? |

| Unfortunately, I'm sure that Vesa is being used as the driver. But I can't actually install any other drivers, because I can't get the Laptop to network. |

I'm sorry; I was too distracted by other events in my life in recent days.
I did look at /etc/X11/xorg.conf
I found that the system had already set the proper (Trident) driver.
Yet I've still gotten nowhere, trying for any resolution above 800x600.
Observation: Video depths lower than 24 are indicated, but 24 is in use. If the 4030CDT is such an old Laptop, it might only have enough graphics memory for 1024x768 if 16-bit depth is used.
Question: Will almost all X11 apps still run, if the X-server is at 16-bit depth? And if the app prefers 24-bit?

After all, this dinosaur is really a Windows 95 -Era computer, just with more RAM added later. So it's really a wonder, that Kanotix is running at all on it. For which reason I also don't intend to run a dist-upgrade on this one. With the full, Updated Packages List, kpackage takes 1 hour and 5 minutes just to load, to scan all its Package tree. I sometimes need to Upgrade only Packages that don't work, for which I've been using apt-get from the command line.
The result is that I'm happy so far with what I got. 
I may even prefer a 24-bit depth 800x600 display, although my peers won't be impressed with that. Over a 16-bit depth 1024x768 display. But before I make that decision final, I'll have to try testing 16-bit mode, and then maybe back again. All of which must happen *after* I attend to more ordinary business in my life. | Well you can set it to 16 (DefaultColorDepth 16). |

Yup, that solved the Resolution Problem. And now in a decent 1024x768 res, I'll decide to accept 16-bit colour depth. Thanks again,
