My thinkpad T60 is dual-booted XP and kanotix easter, 2.6.18 smp kernel.
When I'm in Kanotix, the hard drive feels a lot warmer than while in Windows.
Just booting up kanotix and putting my hand on the keyboard I can feel it.
While in Windows for hours, I feel no warmth at all.
What should I be looking at in Kanotix ? |

Ditto
Piper: I guess the cooler for the beers will have another function after all. |

Doesn 't some power management thingy power down the hard drive in laptops after a period of inactivity? ... once after a dist-upgrade before the days of freeze-rc.d it was installed on my desktop and I was wondering why my hard drive was being powered down every few seconds. Perhaps the power saving thingy isn't set up properly for the hard drive?? |

@op4latino: Under windows, I use speedfan by Alfredo Comparetti. This guy knows everything about sensor chips and how to read them. Some chips even allow you to control fan speed manually.
@Anthony: You can use gkrellm to monitor hard drive actitivity and system temperatures.
Code:
apt-get update && apt-get install gkrellm lm-sensors
sensors-detect
Follow the instructions, then launch gkrellm from the Debian menu (Apps --> System). By the way, "krellm" refers to "krell meter" from the movie The Forbidden Planet. |

My hard drive is also hotter in Kanotix.
I believe it started getting hotter about 3~4 weeks ago.
Temp in Kanotix : 56 C
Temp in Windows: 49 C
Kanotix temperature read with hddtemp through Ksensors.
Windows temperature read with mobmeter.
I have a feeling something changed in laptop-mode-tools.
I have an Acer Ferrari 3400 which is notorious for hot hard drives.

I had the same problem. I found out that the kernel is driving the hard drive hard. This is what I had to do at console, not in config yet.
hdparm -M240 /dev/hda
That puts the acoustics down to 240 on the primary HD.
Kanotix runs it at 254, very hot, very noisey. |

Usually AAM values are 128 (quiet), 192 (sometimes middle setting), 254 (fast) and 0 (disable) but never 240. As AAM is stored within the HD itself and no -M would be called at all at bootup or somewhere else. Check current setting with -M without a number. |

Kano:
My acoustic = 0.
Will setting this to a different number cool the HDD when running?

As I understood hdparm man, the range was from 128 to 254. I understood that a setting between those two are acceptable. My HD recommends 192.
I noticed when I installed Kantonix in place of windows, my HD made a sound similar to what the old floppy drives made. VERY loud when accessing, while it wasn't during WinXP. A ran hdparm as stated above, now its very quiet. I can set my ear next to the HD and barely hear any sound. I also noticed a heat reduction afterwards also.
if I run:
hdparm -M /dev/hda
I'll get:
acoustic=0
But if I run:
hdparm -I /dev/hda
it shows my current setting of 240
I just report what worked for me, and what I see. |

under:
Recommended acoustic management value: 192, current value: 240
It did say "current value: 254"
I changed that to 240; less noise; cooler running. |
