It's normal to download the iso from the left hand menu and burn the 700MB to a CD. Do you have a problem with downloading?

I don't mind donating some money and receiving a working bootable CD in return.
Because I can download it, but when I burn it to a CD it doesn't boot up when I start my computer. But when I use the old version of Kanotix, it does boot up (I forgot how I burned it). But when I use the old Live! CD of Kanotix, I don't see the button to "Install Kanotix to HD" anymore on the 'K' button list. I was told on IRC to get the newest version which I did, but it won't boot up with it.
I've tried unzipping all the files from the .iso into the CD, and I've also tried to just put the .iso file into the CD but neither works to boot up with so I've wasted 2 CD-Rs |

Have you checked the md5sum of the iso? Did you burn at low speed as DAO? There's no reason that the ISO shouldn't boot if correctly downloaded/burned. When you say it doesn't boot, does the initial GRUB screen come up?

No I didn't check the md5sum because before I didn't have to. How would I go about checking it?
I don't know if I burned at a low speed as DAO.
The GRUB screen doesn't come up like the other old CD I burned; it pauses for a few seconds like it's reading the CD and I can hear the CD run, but then it goes straight to Windows XP. If I pop the CD in, the Kanotix introduction in FireFox window comes up
I tried to mail the admin but when I click on the "contact" button on the left hand side of this site, it says "You are not allowed to administrate the contact module!" |

1. Read the FAQ
2. Read the the manual
3. Read the wiki
then burn
(never unzip the iso with win, that is nonsense, you'll read it)
4. check the forum again be searching with keywords
if there is a problem nevertheless
ask again

If you are using windows, search the web for a freeware MD5 checker (assuming you would rather use freeware). A checksum file is used to compare a published MD5 sum with the checksum of a downloaded file, i.e. to get an idea if the file is not corrupted or modified. The problems you mentioned could indicate that the .iso you downloaded is damaged in some way. If you want to know more, try here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MD5. I recently tried a few programs, without any special knowledge of these, and the only requirements I had were to find something that would run as a stand alone (i.e. did not require a windows install) and was easy to use (i.e. with a UI and not command line--sorry all you linux console lovers...!) I used a freeware program from www.midwavi.com (but try any of the software aggregation sites). I am sure there are better apps out there! This MD5 program is easy to use, and works with CD size files. I have used it on DVD sized files but it somes times crashes. If you are concerned about "wasting" CDs, you should try re-writable CDs when testing LiveCDs or downloads. |

I just checked the md5sum of the Kanotix I just downloaded and it's fine. I got it right from the servers Kanotix.de provided.
Now, how can I properly DAO burn this onto an empty CD? (Which by the way I have to go out and buy a pack when I only need one ^^) |

Where can I get the KANOTIX-CD?
The most comfortable way to get the CD is to order it from Kano directly. There you will always find the most recent version of Kanotix.
If you are interested in purchasing an adapted version of CD/DVD, please feel free to contact Kano directly , who always has DVDs on stock or will customize a "Special Edition" with his autograph for you. |

I'm using "CD/DVD Burner XP pro" under Windows now.
Do I select "Joliet", Iso level 1, or iso level 2? |

There are only those 3 choices for ISO burning - I'm on Windows XP Home SP2
Joliet is the default, ISO Level 1, and ISO Level 2 are the other two options
Unless there is some other way to configure DAO which I have already tried to configure in the Settings but there is nothing else to set |

For md5sum I (still) use winMd5Sum http://www.nullriver.com/index/products/winmd5sum I liked it because you don't need to open a command line window. You use windows explorer, right-click the file you want to check, go to "Sent to" and winMd5sum will be there.
When I burnt my first CD I used BurnCDcc
Find it here http://www.terabyteunlimited.com/utilities.html It's like the 6th link.
Remember to burn the CD as lowest as posible. 8x for new burners and 4x for the not too new.
For BurnCDcc, do I check off "SAO"? Is SAO = DAO in this case? And I pick 8x instead of Optimal, right? Will this 100% work? |

what? This is a screenshot of the BurnCDCC version I have
as you can see, there's no DOA/SAO option in there.
I downloaded that version when knoppix 3.7 came out (Jul 05/04? ) I don't know if the link I gave you installs a new version.
And yes, I do prefer k3b but sometimes I'm too lazy to logout XP and boot kanotix. and yes, I've burnt new kanotix CDs with BurnCDcc |

You mentioned a previous version of Kanotix worked. Use K3b in LiveCD mode - it will automatically detect all settings to burn the .iso.

hmmm, bummer. yeah, I'll try SAO (that's what I use under kb3) and maybe Finalize too. or if you want I can send you my copy. It's 188kb uncompressed thru e-mail (I don't know what's the limit for attachments in this forum)
Or do what drb said, boot the working kanotix and use K3b |
