I just installed 2006-01-rc4. Everything was working fine. Then I dropped into inti 3 and using aptitude ran d-u. no errors were reported and everything seemed to install fine. Rebooted and ran into login screen (strange because my setup had been to automatically go into kde). Gave my password, it appeared to except it, but returned to login screen, tried again, everything froze. OK. using d0-fixes reinstall video driver (radeon), everything went fine except ran into the same problem at starting init 5. I see possibaly four causes. 1) bad driver, 2) bad xorg install 3) bad kde install, or 4) d-u too big (over 600 packages although no other d-u tries have turned up anything new). Is there a fix that I can try, or do I reinstall and any suggestions to avoid falling into the same problem again. |

Go to: http://techpatterns.com/forums/about736.html
and read a bit. Then run h2's script to get properly upgraded.
Unless you have hardware problems this should get you running.
It worked for me recently on a fresh install of 2006-01-rc4 dist-upgraded with h2's script. |

Yup, aptitude borked it, not good for sid, (I don't like it (period) for sarge (stable) either )
If still having problems you might want to try (not saying it will work)
Code:
apt-get install --reinstall -o DPkg::Options::=--force-confmiss -o DPkg::Options::=--force-confnew kdebase-data
or
Code:
apt-get install --reinstall kdebase-data

Found the solution. d-u couldn't handle the 600 upgrades. took it in smaller chunks and it was fine. By the way I noticed that apt-get has inproved greatly, I stopped using it because a couple of times I tried to install a conflicting packed, it decided that it would solve the problem by getting rid of kde. Thanx for your suggestions. |

you might have found a solution, but not the cause.
apt can easily handle large number of packages.
i had ~1500 for testing stuff.
neither has it ever decided to get rid of kde here.
